Early Learning in Abbotsford School District

Abbotsford School District supports Early Learning Initiatives in our community.

Did you know:

• A child's earliest experiences shape brain development
• Between conception and entry to school, the developing brain establishes sight, hearing, language and cognitive ability.
• "Healthy functioning" is not characterized by how much a child knows, but how much she/he is capable of learning.
• 1/4 of Canada's children between birth and age six are experiencing some learning or behavioural difficulty.

The District works with a number of community partners to make a difference for children entering our schools. Here are descriptions of some of the programs offered at our local schools:

Ready, Set, Learn provides young children and parents some early learning opportunities. Children from birth to 5 years of age and their parents are welcome to drop in. See  Ready, Set, Learn 2012 program schedule for pre-schoolers (updated February 2012, pdf)

Preschool in our schools - Many of our schools offer Preschool programs at their sites.

Preschool Hubs
Therapeutic kindergarten readiness programs, health and dental programs, before and after school care, and more are offered at our Babich Hub center for Preschool children.

StrongStart centers
An early learning initiative in conjunction with the BC Ministry of Education offering free drop-in sessions at schools. Drop-ins are geared towards preschool-aged children (0-5) accompanied by their parents/caregivers and are offered in partnership with Abbotsford School District and community providers

The Traveling Three-Year Old Roadshow
A program for three-year olds that takes a fun approach to what your child needs in order to succeed at school. The Roadshow will be visiting all local schools throughout  the school year. Flyers and more information will be available at your local school. Please come back and check this website for specific dates in the Fall.

Welcome to Kindergarten
The School District will be hosting an evening event for parents and their 4 year olds. The evening will be an opportunity for parents to gather ideas and activities to help their preschoolers get ready for school. Activities with stories, letters, words, and fine motor activities will be included.
